There's a special kind of magic that happens when the house gets quiet, the coffee table fills with scraps, modge podge, and the girls gather around with that spark in their eyes. You know the one... the "we're about to make something" spark that all girly crafty girls get. Last night, we leaned fully into that feeling and spent some time crafting D&D journals using the junk-journal method, and honestly, it was perfect.
We started with simple composition notebooks - nothing fancy, nothing expensive. Just the kind of blank slate that practically begs to be transformed. Then we pulled out all the things that brought us joy. If you are wanting to make your own, here are a few ideas you can use:
- scrapbook paper
- old book pages
- stickers
- washi tape
- bits of ribbon
- fabric scraps
- stamps
- glue
- scissors
- little trinkets
- ink pads
- glitter
At the end of the day, it's all about using what you have that speaks to you and what your minds eye likes on the page. Each of these things are just waiting for their moment. As you can see in what I ended the night with, it is not complete as I need to get some wooden letters to add my character name and an image of her to the outside, but I have a beautiful, layered, ripped, and inked beginning. Perfectly imperfect just like me!
While our table looked like chaos, it was the good kind. Each of us approached our journal differently, which is my favorite part of crafting with the girls. Mack went full dark vibes until her cover looked like a night sky with a moon being held in her hands. Mads went with soft colors and delicate dreamcatchers and feathers ending with something whimsical. And I went very minimalistic with florals and soft colors that had just enough whimsy to make my heart dance.
There was laughter, and quiet concentration, and that gentle hum of creativity that fills ar oom without needing to be loud. We passed scissors back and forth, held up our pages to show each other,a nd celebrated every little detail. It wasn't about perfection. It wasn't even about making something "Pinterest-worthy." It was simply about making something ours and doing it together.
by the end of the night, we each had a D&D joural that felt personal, magical, and ready to be filled with character notes, campaign memories, doodles, spells, maps, and whatever else our adventures bring. They're perfectly imperfect in the best way - textured, layered, handmade, and full of heart.
And nonestly? I think that's what makes them even more special.
Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that the most fun things we do aren't big events or elaborate plans that derail our budgets. Soemtimes it's just sitting around the table with those you love, crafting something simple, laughing, and making memories we'll carry into our next session.
A cozy night.
A handfull of supplies.
Three junk-journal D&D notebooks ready for adventure.
I'llt ake that kind of magic any day.
